Position description
The SF Bicycle Coalition is a partner agency of the SF Safe Routes to School (SRTS) project, working to make it safer, easier, and more fun to walk and bike to school. SF Bicycle Coalition provides intensive support at 35 public elementary schools, and is the lead agency for citywide Bike & Roll To School Week (BR2SW) April 18-22 2016. Last year a record 93 schools from pre-k to high school participated, and over 3,000 students, parents and school staff biked or rolled to school.
The Bike & Roll to School Communications Intern will have an inside view of the SF Bicycle Coalition, a vibrant growing nonprofit/advocacy organization and gain first-hand experience with the unique communications challenges when reaching parents and school communities. Tasks will be tailored to match the intern’s individual interests and our mission: to promote the bicycle for everyday transportation for ages 8 to 80.
Roles and Responsibilities (will vary)
- Direct outreach, both e-communications and other, with parents, school staff and SF Bicycle Coalition members to engage them in BR2SW
- Organize and assist with database management, email/phone communication, trainings
- Represent SRTS and the SF Bicycle Coalition at PTA and community meetings and events
- Develop and execute mass emails, blog posts, and social media posts
- Data collection and evaluation pre- and post-event
- Help with the big events
Required skills or abilities:
- Strong written, online and oral communication skills. Bilingual in Spanish or Cantonese a big plus
- Comfort and proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google tools
- Passion for making San Francisco a better city for biking and living
- Experience in (or willingness to learn) community outreach
- Ability to get around the city to attend meetings and do outreach
- Ability to work on tasks independently
Desired skills or abilities:
- Graphic design experience (Adobe Creative Suite)
- Salesforce experience
- Photo or video documentation
Required dates for this internship include:
- January 2016: First day orientation (exact day TBD)
- April 18-22 2016: Bike & Roll To School Week

This unpaid internship offers a flexible schedule with a 10-15 hour/week minimum commitment. This is chiefly a Monday through Friday internship, with occasional evenings and weekends. Interns are expected to make a three-month commitment, which may be extended. While the position is not paid, we are happy to work with any academic requirements the intern may have to help them earn course credit for their efforts.
